Summertime and the Living is Easy
We love Tucson in the summer; things slow down, school is out, traffic is lighter, and once the monsoons arrive the nights have a tropical, romantic feel to them.
We also realize that the days can be amazingly hot, and the sun can do a good amount of damage to unprotected skin. So we’d like to share how we enjoy our Tucson summers while keeping our skin healthy. We start our days early, right before the sun rises. It is a beautiful time of the day to go for a run or take a walk; it’s still cool, and as the sun rises the colors on the Rincon Mountains are incredible.
If you are not an early morning person, another good time to be outside is in the evenings, near sunset. You will have quite a bit of time for a run or a stroll before it gets fully dark. Don’t forget to watch for the critters who also like this time of day!
This is a good time of the year to renew our commitment to practice healthy skin strategies and reduce our risk of skin cancer, something we here in the Southwest need to do year-round. Research has found that even a few serious sunburns can significantly increase a person’s skin cancer risk – but when diagnosed early, skin cancer is easily treatable. So keep a close watch on your skin and schedule an appointment with your dermatologist once a year for a complete skin check – all those areas you can’t see need to be checked by a professional!
Because the sun’s rays age our skin and break down collagen, we recommend that you apply a broad spectrum sunscreen first thing in the morning every day of the year. Besides your face, apply some to the tops of your ears, neck (front and back), your hands, arms, chest, legs and feet. Sunscreen sprays are helpful for your scalp and hair part. Your skin will thank you for it!
Use a broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher and use enough of it. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends at least one ounce or more, enough to more than fill a shot glass. That will be the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of your body properly. Of course if you are swimming or sweating you will need to reapply your sunscreen frequently. We carry various sunscreens that offer broad spectrum UVA-UVB protection. We can help you find a sunscreen that is right for you; one that feels great and works well with your skin, with or without makeup.
Wear UV-blocking sunglasses with 99 to 100 percent absorption to protect the sensitive skin around the eye. Wear a hat with a brim large enough to shield the ears and neck.
Invest in clothing with built-in UVA blockers to provide an extra layer of protection. Many outdoor and sports clothing brands sell lightweight trendy gear that offer up to 50+ UPF (ultraviolet protection factor). Another good option is to wash clothes in a specialty detergent that boosts the UPF of your everyday clothes for up to 20 washes.
